Max and I found another Salmon Fly in the drift today. I think this one is a male, from a location more than 10 miles downstream from the Skid bitch I found last week. This is the Skid bitch I found earlier in the week with her egg cluster still intact.

Hey TM..How do you tell the sex with Salmon Flies/Stones..or is it not so obvious.. Very good question and one that I am searching for an informative answer to give you. My assumption that the one we found today bieng a male, is by observing the differences from the Skid bitch I found a few days ago, with egg cluster attached. The Skid bitch seems to have lighter colored legs, the wings extend further past the body, the overall color patterns and markings were slightly different. Many species of Stonefly males, such as the Bow Rivers, Golden Stoneflys (Hesperoperla Pacifica), that Max has posted photo's of, have stunted wings that render them flightless. However, with some species of Stoneflys, the males are flightless, even though their wings are fully developed. I am not certain about the Bow Rivers, Salmon Flys, (Pteronarcys Dorsata). I will let you know when I find out the answer. Notice the slightly longer wings on the Skid bitch in this photo and it is a size larger as well (typical with many stoneflys species), compared to the second photo from todays specimen. Also, notice the lighter body color of the Skid bitch in #1, which has more orange on its underside compared to #2. I am not certain and they both could be females. We will try and find the answer. I have asked Roger Rohrbeck at www.flyfishingentomology.com for information. Photo #2 Great photo's Max, Brownstone. I think this thread is going to see a lot of bug photos over the next 5 months!

Omigod....I have a huge cash of the heebie jeebies after looking through this thread this morning . I'm suddenly feeling quite itchy. Serious question though: do stoneflies/salmonflies bite? Other than the 'experience' last summer, I've never been close enough to one to find that out.
